Merck (Shanghai) Trading Co., Ltd.
Merck’s ties to China can be traced back to 1888. when Willy Merck, a member of the Merck family, visited China during a round-the-world trip. In a remarkably farsighted journal entry, he wrote,“I firmly believe that China will become considerably more powerful than any other nation, should it wish to.” In 1933. Merck officially entered the Chinese market with the establishment of its first subsidiary in Shanghai — the E. Merck Chemical Co., Ltd. Through wars, economic cycles, and the momentous era of China’s reform and opening-up, Merck has remained committed, bringing world-class technologies, products, and services to China, and staying true to its promise of “rooted in China, committed to China.”
Over the past 90 years, Merck has grown from just 22 employees to a presence spanning 21 registered entities across Beijing, Shanghai, Hong Kong, Wuxi, Suzhou, and Nantong, with nearly 4.500 employees. From cutting-edge gene-editing technologies and novel approaches to tackling the most challenging diseases, to enabling intelligent devices — Merck is everywhere.
China is one of Merck’s most strategically important countries and a key engine of growth. Over the past decade, Merck has significantly stepped up its investments in the Chinese market, committing nearly RMB 7 billion to building factories and laboratories in Shanghai, Suzhou, Wuxi, Nantong, Guangzhou and other cities. In addition, Merck has forged numerous strategic partnerships with local companies.
